HP Sony Ericsson K750i

Posted by nasfa On 5:46 PM

The Sony Ericsson K750i, introduced in 2005, is a high-end mobile phone, the successor to the now discontinued K700, and which was succeeded by the K800i in Q2 2006.

Design

The K750i is a candybar style phone that weighs 99 grams (3.5 ounces), with its buttons that can be used with any finger. It has the 'dual-front' design common to most Sony Ericsson mobile phones since the T610, with the back of the mobile phone designed like a digital camera and intended to be held sideways to take photographs. The K750i is available in four colours, Blue, Oxidized Black, metallic red and Blasted Silver (the latter of which is exclusive to Vodafone in the United Kingdom) with a red version later released. The central joystick button is used for selecting options and navigating menus, with the "C" button as an 'undo' or 'delete' button, and the arrow-labelled button as a 'return' or 'back' button. The two buttons labelled by white horizontal lines, known as 'hotkeys' or 'soft keys' perform the function of making binary decisions, labelled on the phone's display. The button in between of these 'soft keys' acts as a shortcut key, which brings up a user-customisable shortcut menu when pressed. The on/off button is located on the top of the phone next to the IrDA port.

There is one side key on the left of the phone; when pressed in standby mode, it opens either the RDS FM radio or the Media Player as selected by the user, allowing playback of WAV/MP3/AAC audio files, and 3GP/MPEG-4 video files. The RDS FM radio has 20 user-configurable presets. The phone also features Sony's Mega Bass technology. A press of this button in media player mode plays or pauses the selected media. The left-hand side of the phone also houses the Memory Stick PRO Duo slot for external solid state memory, which is protected by a flexible rubber cover.

On the right-hand side of the phone there are three keys - two for controlling volume, skipping through tracks in the Media Player and zooming in and out when in camera mode. If the button is pressed when the headset isn't attached the phone displays a phone status screen showing profile, memory usage, battery level, and, on some mobile networks, phone number. The included handsfree headset is also required to listen to the radio since it functions as the antenna.

MP3 & connectivity

The phone has good all-round support for many versions of the MP3 file format, however support for WAV encoded files is not as extensive

AAC support is good, but the phone can only properly handle LC AAC. HE-AAC (aka AAC+, aka eAAC) will play since HE-AAC is designed to be backwards compatible, however the SBR component will be ignored. The same is true with HE-AAC v2 (aka eAAC+), only the normal LC component of the file will be played. The SBR and parametric stereo (introduced with HE-AAC v2) is ignored. Since HE-AAC v2 encodes the sound as a mono-aural track and the stereo separation is recreated through the PS data, HE-AAC v2 files played on a K750 actually play back in mono.

The phone can also be used as a modem via Bluetooth,Infrared or USB . According to the Sony Ericsson website, the K750 has a talk time battery life of 9 hours and a standby time battery life of 400 hours.

Modding

Since K750i and W800i are essentially two phones with exactly same hardware specifications, soft modifications are available to convert a K750i to a W800i by using flashing software and the firmware files of the W800i model. Such modified phone will be able to use the Walkman feature which is available to W series phones only.
Such phone can also use the flight mode option which allows the phone to work only as a media player while other functions, like cellphone radio system, are turned off. This option is essentially usable when in places where mobile phone transmitters must be turned off.
This modification will revoke your model from the guarantee even if it still exists in guarantee period.

Price

Since the release of its successor, the market price has dramatically fallen and is currently available on a UK pre-paid network for £39.99. In Ireland, the current price is €79 on O2 network. In Australia, it is about $100 or $200 depending on different carriers.

Sony Ericsson P990

Posted by nasfa On 3:22 PM

Sony Ericsson P990 is a smartphone and the successor of Sony Ericsson P910. The Free Ponsel uses the UIQ 3 software platform, which is based upon Symbian OS 9.1. It was released in August 2006. The P990 has a numeric keypad that flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard below the display, on the phone itself. This is a change from P910 where the keyboard is on the flip. The flip itself can be attached or detached using the screw and screwdriver found in the box. The phone is a UMTS (3G) and tri-band GSM phone supporting video calls through its front VGA camera. The touchscreen displays 262,521 colours (18-bit colour depth) with a resolution of 240x320 pixels. It also comes with a 2.0 Megapixel camera featuring autofocus and an FM/RDS radio. The P990 runs the Nexperia PNX4008 ARM9 208 MHz processor from Philips. The screen despite a smaller length (2.8 inch) than its predecessors is actually larger in area because of the increased width. The phone also improves over the P910 by including support for Wi-Fi, allowing users to connect to 802.11b wireless networks. You can browse the Web using the built in Opera browser.

Connectivity has been an ongoing problem with the UIQ3 suite of phones from Sony Ericsson and the Mac OS X iSync utility that mac users use to synchronise the phone to the computer. As of February 2008 there are still widespread problems reported with these phones for Mac users.

P990 was the major smartphone device launched after P910. It had the latest UIQ user interface 3 which was completely incompatible with previous device applications. Like of P900 and P910 so new applications have to be written hence device did not have as many applications as older devices had. But the major issue was RAM which was much less (64MB) of which device used 48MB in start up (OS) and only 16MB was available for the user. This caused the phone to work slowly and crash frequently. Sony Ericsson later updated the firmware which made OS reduce its size up to 2MB and gave the user 17MB of memory to use. There were improvements seen in the phone after the software update.

Sony Ericsson P1i

Posted by nasfa On 5:19 PM

The Sony Ericsson P1 is the successor of the P990. It integrates many of the hardware features of the P990 in the form factor of the M600. It was announced on 8th May 2007.[1] There is a Chinese version of P1 called P1c. Compare with P1/ P1i, P1c lacks of 3G, thereby using EDGE which is much slower but more available especially in the US and parts of Europe.

The phone uses the UIQ 3.0 software platform, which is based upon Symbian OS 9.1. It is slightly thicker than the M600 as a result of the new hardware features, but this is reportedly largely indiscernible. It is nonetheless considerably thinner than the P990 (25% smaller - as the official press review states).

Key Improvements

As a result of its increased RAM, the P1's multitasking performance is more stable than that of the first batch of UIQ 3 phones from Sony Ericsson (P990, M600 and W950). The boot speed, when compared to the P990, is also discernibly faster.

The P1 uses the form factor of the M600 and consequently shares its screen size of 2.6 inches, making it 0.2 inches smaller than its predecessor. However, due to the new transflective layer on its LCD display, legibility under direct sunlight has been improved on the P1. This addresses a common problem faced by owners of the P990.

The phone has 256MB of ROM; twice as much as its predecessor. The P1 also has 160MB of built in storage, which can be expanded by up to 8GB using its Memory Stick Micro slot

Main Features

  • 3.15MP camera with autofocus, Video - QVGA 320x240 15fps, LED Flash, 3X Digital Zoom, Business Card Scanning and Picture Blogging
  • Rocker QWERTY Keyboard with two letters sharing on one key
  • Video Telephony (uses both front and back cameras)
  • 256MB Flash, 160MB user free memory
  • 128MB RAM (79MB free on startup)
  • Symbian OS v9.1 UIQ 3.0
  • 512 MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) bundled on package
  • OptiMobile VoIP client (not included)
  • FM Radio with RDS support, Gracenote TrackID service
  • Enhanced standby screen - can have up to 15 applications shortcuts 15 now, instead of 5 (on P990,M600 and W950 respectively)
  • "Record Conversation" is not available
  • QuickOffice Document reader and editor, pdf+ reader

The Nokia 6630 is a 3G smartphone made by Nokia, using the Series 60 platform with the Symbian operating system, released in November 2004. It is an evolution of the 6600 and 6620 smartphones, supporting tri-band GSM (900, 1800, 1900 MHz) and W-CDMA (2100 MHz) mobile networks (Nokia's third W-CDMA phone after the prototype Nokia 6650 and the test type Nokia 7600). It also supports EDGE packet data connections. It is also an evolution of the 7610 and 6670 which run on lower operating systems, when 6630 was released it made these phones look like cheap cousins and evidently reduced the demand for both models.

The Nokia 6630 is the first phone ever that allows truly global roaming; previously GSM phones have had near-global coverage except in Japan where 2G phone standards were different. The 6630 automatically uses the W-CDMA network in Japan. 6650 and 7600 were also able to function in Japan, but they did not support GSM1900, often needed in the United States (the Nokia 6651 has the GSM 1900).

During its development, the 6630 was nicknamed Charlie.

Features

Pre-installed software includes an e-mail client, a rudimentary web browser and Microsoft Office file viewer. It also includes support for MP3 and AAC playback at full quality (44.1 kHz, 16 bits, stereo), and the retail package includes stereo headphones with hands-free functionality.

As opposed to the 6600 and 6620's VGA resolution digital camera (640×480), the 6630 has a 1.3-megapixel camera (1280×960). It can record video clips at the resolution of 176×144, using H.263 video compression. Like the 6600 and 6620, the 6630 has Bluetooth capabilities and has a 176×208 pixel 65,000-color TFT LCD. It comes with a hotswappable DV-RS-MMC card, capacity 32 or 64 MB depending on the region where the phone is sold. It is noteworthy that normal RS-MMC cards do not work with the 6630, it requires dual-voltage (1.8 V and 3.0 V) RS-MMC cards. Currently it has been known to support up to 2 GB from a DV-RS-MMC but may support more.

The 6630 is capable of video calling using the main handset camera, however a separate forward facing camera is not featured. Nokia released a video call stand (PT-8) exclusively for the 6630 featuring a separate camera to enable face-to-face video calling. The video call stand requires a connection to mains power using a Nokia wall charger, which unfortunately restricts it to indoor 'desk based' use. The 6630 was primarily marketed for its 3G data capabilities rather than video calling functionality. The succeeding Nokia 6680 featured a separate forward facing camera for face-to-face video calling.

The main CPU in this smartphone is an ARM compatible chip (OMAP 1710 (ARMv5 architecture, Arm9 core)) running at 220 MHz, an unprecedented speed for a smartphone at its release. For comparison, the 6600 and N-Gage only run at 104 MHz.

It weighs 127 grams and measures at 110 mm × 60 mm × 21 mm.
